AHI 102 Winter 2023 Exhibition

AHI 102 presents Appetite for Change, taking place on March 14th and March 16th at the Memorial Union on the UC Davis campus. This exhibition brings together diverse groups and community partnerships among the UC Davis community, showcasing the ways UCD provides support for students struggling with food insecurity. We invite you to join our safe space to explore the various food resources readily available to help.

Appetite for Change seeks to destigmatize and raise awareness of food insecurity in the student community of UC Davis by offering both long-term and short-term solutions. Our short-term solution is presenting students with fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables from on-campus resources–- the Pantry, Fruit & Veggie Up! and the Student Farm–- along with a variety of recipes of delicious dishes made up of healthy ingredients. The recipes are on cards with drawings by UC Davis Undergraduate artists Claire Rosefield, Emerald Ramirez, Vanessa Medina, Cristian Juarez, Gunnar Honour, Erica Oropeza, and Lina Tellefsen.

Check out the Artists Page to learn more about them!

About

About the Exhibition

What is food insecurity? The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines food insecurity as not being able to afford having or acquiring enough healthy food to live an active and healthy lifestyle. Being food insecure includes not eating balanced meals, constantly worrying about the next meal, cutting the size of meals or skipping meals. Food insecurity is not just about hunger, but also about malnutrition that can be very damaging to one's physical and mental health.

How does this impact UC Davis? The UC Davis Student Food Security Task Force reported that an estimated 44% of UCD students face some level of food insecurity. Due to a number of interrelated factors-- financial and housing insecurity, student debt, and family obligations-- many UCD students are food insecure. Food insecurity has become both normalized and stigmatized. Between the stresses of school and food insecurity, students find themselves trapped in an endless cycle of going hungry or relying on unhealthy fast food and cheap meals.

How has the university responded to this crisis of food insecurity?

Appetite for Change raises awareness of the patchwork of resources that UCD has to offer including the Pantry, Fruit & Veggie Up!, and the Student Farm. Aware that the exhibition is a temporary short-term solution to food insecurity bridging the gap between students experiencing food insecurity by offering access to nutritious food and healthy meals. Appetite for Change also serves as a platform to advocate change by inviting the UC Davis community to come up with long-term sustainable and equitable solutions so that every UCD student can be food secure.
